Head Spa or Trichology Consultation?
How to Choose the Right Scalp Care in St. Charles, MO
If you want relaxation, routine scalp care or support with oil, dryness and product buildup, a head spa may be the right place to begin.
If you are experiencing persistent shedding, visible thinning, density changes or recurring scalp concerns, a trichology consultation offers a more in-depth starting point.
Sometimes, however, symptoms such as burning, pain, sudden bald patches or open areas should be evaluated by a medical provider before receiving either service.
Here is how to understand the difference.
What is a head spa?
A head spa is a restorative service centered around the scalp, hair and sensory experience.
At Notch + Mill, our head-spa rituals may include:
Magnified scalp imaging
Customized cleansing and gentle exfoliation
Scalp and hair treatments
Therapeutic massage
Steam, hydrotherapy and NIR/LED support (Clinical)
A restorative environment designed to help you slow down
A head spa can be a wonderful choice when your goals include deep relaxation, removing product buildup, refreshing an oily scalp, supporting hydration or simply giving your scalp more intentional care.
The immediate difference many guests notice is not only how their scalp feels—it is how their entire body feels when it finally has permission to slow down.

A head spa can support a cleaner, more comfortable scalp environment, but it should not be presented as a treatment or cure for hair loss.
Head-spa services have not been proven to regrow lost hair. A scalp massage, water halo or magnified image does not automatically make a service hair-loss focused.
When shedding or thinning is the primary concern, the more important questions are:
When did the change begin?
Is the shedding sudden or gradual?
Has the density changed in a particular pattern?
Are there possible nutritional, hormonal, genetic, medication or lifestyle influences?
Does the scalp show visible signs that should be referred for medical evaluation?
How will changes be documented and monitored?
Those questions require a different kind of appointment.
What is a trichology consultation?
Trichology is the study of the hair and scalp. A non-medical trichology consultation looks beyond the surface-level appearance of the scalp to explore the history, patterns and possible influences surrounding a guest’s concerns.
At Notch + Mill, an In-Depth Hair Loss + Scalp Consultation may include:
A detailed hair, scalp, health and lifestyle history
Review of shedding, medications, stressors and recent changes
High-magnification trichoscopy imaging
Documentation of density and visible follicular patterns
Discussion of home-care and professional support options
Testing or laboratory considerations when appropriate
Referral to a dermatologist, physician or other qualified provider when needed
A personalized plan and 30-day follow-up
This consultation is performed by Kim Stahlheber, a licensed cosmetologist with 17 years of experience, Board-Certified Trichologist and Bauman Certified Hair Coach.
We do not diagnose medical conditions or prescribe medication. Our role is to help guests better understand what they are noticing, document visible changes, provide appropriate non-medical support and recognize when another professional should become part of the care team.
Learn about our hair-loss and scalp-health approach. What can scalp imaging actually show?
Magnified scalp imaging can help us document visible characteristics such as:
Oil or product accumulation
Flaking and scaling
Redness or visible irritation
Hair-shaft variation
Differences in density
Empty follicular openings
Changes that should be monitored or referred
Imaging is valuable when it is interpreted within the context of the guest’s history and compared consistently over time.
It is not a medical diagnosis. A cleaner-looking image immediately after a head spa primarily confirms that cleansing occurred—it does not prove that a scalp condition was corrected or that hair growth has begun. The value is not simply seeing the image; it’s understanding what the image can and cannot tell us.
When should a head spa be postponed?
Sometimes the safest head spa is the one we do not perform.
We may pause, modify or refer a guest before providing a stimulating scalp service when we see or hear about:
Sudden or unusually heavy shedding
Round, smooth or rapidly changing bald patches
Burning, stinging, pain or persistent tenderness
Open sores, pustules, bleeding or crusting
Possible scarring or loss of visible follicular openings
Significant redness or inflammation
A diagnosed condition requiring medical guidance
Recent procedures, medications or health changes that may affect service safety
Certain forms of scarring alopecia can permanently damage follicles. Early medical evaluation matters, which is why aggressive stimulation, scraping or automatically performing the latest viral treatment is not always appropriate.
Professional judgment includes knowing when to proceed—and when to stop.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the difference between a head spa and a trichology consultation?
A head spa focuses primarily on cleansing, conditioning, scalp comfort and relaxation. A trichology consultation takes a more detailed look at persistent shedding, thinning, density changes and recurring scalp concerns through history, imaging, education and personalized next steps.
Can a head spa regrow hair?
There is not good evidence that a head-spa service regrows lost hair. It can support scalp cleanliness, comfort and relaxation, but guests experiencing hair loss should receive more comprehensive guidance with our Board Certified Trichologist, Kimberly Stahlheber or their medical provider.
Can scalp imaging diagnose a scalp condition?
Magnified imaging can document visible characteristics and help monitor changes, but it does not replace medical examination or diagnosis. Our team will interpret what they see and how it relates, but will not provide a diagnosis.
Who performs scalp services at Notch + Mill?
